I don’t feel any description I could give would do it justice but Death in the Spires by K. J. Charles is a dark academia mystery novel with a British gothic aesthetic. In 1905, ten years after his best friend was murdered in 1895, Jeremy Kite tracks down the university friend group trying to work out what happened (the narrative splits between 1905 and 1895 – but not in any way that feels jarring). In particular, the architectural settings descriptions (Oxford) and a recurring motif of unsmiling photographs (because back then they couldn’t smile due to exposure time) both feel pretty gothic.

Thank you for the recommendation! This sounds right up my alley. I’ll have to check it out.
